Sunset
Magnar Børnes  Norway
A blue anemone with the sunset behind it. A flash was used to enhance the blue colour of the flower while the sun was partially hidden behind some trees, in order to soften the light a little.

Pentax K10D with Pentax FA 200mm macro; ISO 100; pattern metering; 1/45 sec at f/5.6

Judges' Comments

“This isn’t a finely detailed study of what a Hepatica looks like, it’s all about the surge of hope we all feel with the return of spring. It doesn’t even matter that the flower isn’t in focus as the strong, complementary colours are much more valuable to the shot. Everything signals excitement.”

Small but Beautiful
Andreas Stridsberg  Sweden
This calm, almost clinical study of a stitchwort is serene in its mood. As a calming wall poster it achieves the desired effect.

Nikon D200 with Tamron 90mm macro lens; ISO 100; spot metering; 1/100 sec at f/5

Judges' Comments

“It’s difficult to know when ‘understated’ becomes a lack of ambition. This calmly executed study of a stitchwort, as an understatement, is exemplary.”.

Autumn Leaf
Annette Blattman  Australia
Sublime lighting on a single leaf just evokes the whole feeling of autumn in this shot. The colours are rich and the lighting is warm and inviting. Excellent use of colour and control of the overall lighting.

Canon EOS 300D with Tamron 90mm macro lens; ISO 200; evaluative metering; 1/200 sec at f/2.8.

Judges' Comments

“Perfect autumnal colours and a splendid example of how carefully controlled light can really saturate the richness of the yellows and reds in a leaf. Very evocative.”
