White Tiger
Sergey Bidun  USA
Sergey photographed Odin, a white tiger, during a trip to Six Flags at Vallejo, California. He had no intention of taking pictures, but Odin’s combination of gracefulness and ferocity forced him to reach for his EOS 5D. The result is a classy shot that’s full of action, drama and personality.

Canon EOS 5D with Canon 17-40mm f/4 L lens; ISO 100; manual metering; 1/500 sec at f/4

Judges' Comments

“A brilliant action shot, which gives a real sense of the tiger’s power.”

“Absolutely stunning.”

“What a cracking shot. The tiger’s expression is both terrifying and awe-inspiring. His huge, outstretched paws suggest he’s leaping on you, and his body fills the frame beautifully.”
2ND PLACE
Black Grouse
Marco Messa  Italy
The scuffling and fighting of these two game birds create an almost comical boxing bout that is full of energy and raw animal display. The backdrop of the cornfield sets it all off.

Canon EOS 1D MkII; ISO 400; 1/1,000 sec at f/5.6

Judges' Comments

“This is a real peak-of-action shot that sums up the excitement and fury of a black grouse lek in spring… A technically flawless study of avian interaction. Superb.”
3RD PLACE
For my Love
Fredy Wijaya  Indonesia
The interaction between animals can often make the best wildlife photographs. This study of the bond between a mother and her baby shows great tenderness.

Canon EOS 20D; ISO 200; 1/250 sec at f/2.2

Judges' Comments

“The baby primate’s expression mimics a human child’s so perfectly. It’s beautiful to look at for hours… An intimate moment captured really well.”
